Principal Meteorologist at the Department of Meteorology, Ms Kelebemang Maswe says this winter above normal temperatures are expected over most parts of Botswana.
In an interview on Tuesday, Ms Maswe said a relatively warm winter was expected in the country, saying the months of May, June and July will experience a ‘not-so cold’ winter.
Ms Maswe highlighted that a transition from El Nino to ENSO-neutral was likely by April –June 2024 adding that there was 83 per cent chance with increasing odds of La Nina developing in June until August by 62 per cent.
However, she said cold spells will be experienced from time to time due to local intra-seasonal variations.
Breaking it by regions, Ms Maswe said the Ngamiland, Chobe and the northern parts of the Central District will experience above normal temperatures.
She said the normal maximum and minimum for those regions will range from 27.4 to 9 degrees Celsius.
She said for the North East, southern parts of central districts and northern parts of Kgatleng District will experience a normal maximum and minimum temperatures from 24.0 to 7 degrees Celsius respectively.
She stated that normal maximum and minimum temperatures for Kgalagadi, Ghanzi, Southern, Southeast, Kweneng and Southern parts of Kgatleng Districts will also be at 23.6 and 5 degrees Celsius respectively.
Ms Maswe advised Batswana to dress according to the climate change, pointing out that it was better to carry a jacket than to be exposed to the cold that might cause flu. ENDS
