Recently, Ms Gaselone Keaitse, a centenarian from Ditshegwane, had her long-held wish fulfilled when President Advocate Duma Boko paid her a special visit earlier this month. At 110 years old, Ms Keaitse views the gesture as an honor not only to herself but to the elderly community at large.
“The President’s visit reflected his humility, and I will always be indebted to him. Even if God calls me soon, I shall rest in eternal peace,” Ms. Keaitse said.
She expressed sentiments growing in prominence after a heartwarming video of her desire to meet the President went viral on social media. A dedicated member of the Botswana National Front, Ms Keaitse sees the recent change in government as a personal victory, particularly since her party is now part of the current administration.
“Though it took many decades for change to happen, I still feel part and parcel of this change and I would die happy,” she said, reflecting on her life that began in 1914, the same year World War I commenced.
Ms Keaitse, who has lived for over a century without being diagnosed with any chronic diseases, describes the transition of governance as a sign of democracy’s maturation.
Born in Letlhakeng and the daughter of a World War I veteran, she retains her hearing and mobility, walking independently with the aid of a stick at her advanced age. Despite having the opportunity to attend school as a child, Ms Keaitse’s education was cut short after a reprimand from a teacher led her to hide in the bushes while others attended class.
“Our classroom was a grass-thatched house, but I am proud to have learned to write on slate,” she reminisced.
Additionally, Ms Keaitse once took on a significant role in her community, providing treatment for women’s health issues, assisting with childbirth, and helping women struggling to conceive. However, due to her age, she has since stepped back from gathering traditional herbs, a practice that was integral to her past.
She attributed her longevity to good genes and a diet rich in traditional foods, Ms Keaitse embodies a deep respect for the customs she holds dear.
Her daughter, Ms Obeilwe Keaitse, who lives with her, emphasises that their family’s respect for traditional ways reflects the values passed down from her mother. ENDS
