Okavango DHMT addresses Diarrhoea outbreak

Okavango District Health Management Team (DHMT) has put up measures to apprehend diarrhoea outbreak in the district.

Addressing full council meeting on Monday, Okavango District Council chairperson, Mr Gaopalelwe Ronald said Okavango DHMT recorded an increase in diarrhoea cases in children below the age of five years in the month of February which turned out to be an outbreak.

“Unfortunately this outbreak resulted in seven diarrhoea related deaths in children under the age of five,” he said. 

Mr Ronald said the most affected villages were Nokaneng and Habu.

He however said DHMT implemented measures such as community sensitisation in affected areas to combat the outbreak and avert deaths resulting from the outbreak.

On other issues, Mr Ronald said Malaria transmission period was coming to an end and that Okavango DHMT had recorded a decline in Malaria cases and zero deaths resulting from Malaria this quarter.

He said DHMT had recorded a cumulative number of Malaria cases of 131 cases compared to 194 cases that were registered last year during the same period. The most affected areas, he said were Sekondoboro, Xakao and Kauxwi.

He said Malaria intervention measures such as distribution of bed nets commenced in the month of March in villages of Okavango. ENDS
