Use data and AI to address challenges

Botswana should use data and Artificial Intelligence to address key challenges such as poverty, inequality, and climate change.
Speaking at a two-day inaugural Data and AI Summit in Gaborone on May 15, the event chairperson, Ms Mphoentle Kgositau said over the past few years, there had been a remarkable transformation in the global technological landscape, with data idea emerging as one of the key drivers of innovation and competitiveness.
“Data and AI Summit serves as the platform for Botswana to reaffirm its commitment to embracing the digital future and charting our path to prosperity,” she said.
She underscored the importance of embracing the digital future and leveraging data and AI as catalysts for economic growth, innovation, education and social progress.
“As we look towards the future, it is imperative that data positions itself at the forefront of this digital revolution, harnessing the power of data and AI to address complex challenges and unlock opportunities for prosperity,” she said.
Ms Kgositau stated that the integration of data and AI across various sectors, from healthcare to education to agriculture could enhance efficiency, improve service delivery, and empower citizens to thrive in the digital age.
“By empowering individuals with the tools and knowledge to thrive in the digital age, we can create a more inclusive and equitable society for all. So we want to thrive both individually and collectively,” she said.
The Director of Economic Empowerment at the Ministry of Entrepreneurship, Mr Ronnie Phuthego said the advent of advanced technologies such as AI coupled with exponential growth of data and technological advancements underlined the need for a fundamental shift in the mindset, policy framework and also collaborative efforts across all sectors.
