The late Bishop Right Reverend, Anthony Rebello of the Francistown Catholic Diocese has been described as a nation builder.
Eulogising the late bishop at a funeral service in Francistown today (May 15), the Mayor of Francistown, Mr Godisang Radisigo said Bishop Rebello was a true nation builder whose work touched countless lives and contributed to the betterment of Botswana, especially in the Northern part of the country.
Bishop Rebello died on May 4 at the age of 74, during a Rosary prayer session walk from Tatisiding to Tonota.
Mr Radisigo said the late Bishop was driven by a sense of purpose and commitment to the betterment of his communities.
He said Bishop Rebello brought people together, inspiring unity and fostering a sense of common purpose, whilst at the same time creating a positive change that benefitted both current and future generations.
“Bishop Rebello exemplified the spirit of a true nation builder, driven by an unwavering commitment to unity, progress, and empowerment,” said Mr Radisigo.
His tireless efforts, according to the mayor served as a beacon of inspiration, creating a lasting positive change and leaving an incredible mark on the hearts and lives of those he touched.
Mr Radisigo also emphasised the vital role that Roman Catholic Cathedral played in Francistown’s journey from a town to a city.
He said the presence of the Cathedral was a key factor in the city’s elevation to its current status, highlighting the significant impact that the late Bishop Rebello and his church had on the community.
The Mayor also commended the two senior secondary schools of St Joseph’s College in Gaborone and Mater Spei College in Francistown, all under the Roman Catholic Church which he said continued to produce good results.
He said the late Bishop Rebello’s lasting legacy was his advocacy on behalf of refugees in Botswana and that through his efforts, the distribution of ARVs was extended to refugee populations, ensuring that some of the most vulnerable members of the society received access to life saving medication.
“This compassionate act was remembered as a testament to Bishop Rubello’s dedication to social justice and his commitment to serving those in need,” added Mr Radisigo.
Also speaking at the funeral, Bishop Father Anthony Ngwenya who is a Diocesan Clergy shared memories of the late Bishop Rebello, recalling both his accomplishments and challenges he faced in his role as a religious leader.
Bishop Anthony Rebello, was born in Kenya and later moved to India together with his parents.
In India, he joined the Missionaries of the divine word and was ordained to the priesthood on May 1977.
He was then sent to study licentiate in spiritual theology at Gregorian in Rome for two years.
He arrived in Botswana as one of the first four missionaries of the divine word in 1981 and served in Maun and Palapye.
He was appointed Bishop of Francistown on July 2021 by his Holiness Pope Francis and was ordained on September 2021 by Archbishop Frank Nubuasah. Ends
