Trans Africa Cash and Carry has launched adopt-a-school initiative, which would benefit 16 schools in different localities.
Speaking at the launch of the initiative on Tuesday in Gaborone, the Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Skills Development , Mr Steven Bothasitse called on Trans Africa and partners to continue investing in the education sector.
Mr Bothasitse said the values modelled by Trans Africa were compassion, collaboration and progress, which resonated with the principles of the ministry.
He said by investing in and empowering the students, Trans Africa was laying a foundation for a more prosperous and equitable society. He said government had set out a transformational agenda that defined their aspirations and goals through Vision 2036.
He further said it was an investment that Trans Africa would realise and enjoy the fruits thereof in future.
He stated that they were currently facing challenges in maintaining buildings, stationery, and other facilities. Additionally, he expressed their gratitude towards partners like Trans Africa for contributing to the country’s development.
According to him, there are 1 019 schools nationwide with a significant budget allocated for maintaining facilities and providing furniture, mattresses, and photocopiers.
He highlighted their inability to conduct examinations due to the lack of photocopiers and copying paper.
“How can we progress if we can’t even conduct exams at a school level?” he questioned.
Mr Bothasitse emphasised that this initiative would contribute to creating a better school environment for those affected.
He commended the growth of the initiative, expanding from two schools in Maun in 2023 to 16 schools in 14 different locations.
Trans Africa Group’s Operations Director, Mr Shane Baby, expressed the company’s belief in community empowerment.
Through this initiative, he said the company aimed to improve the learning environment, support educational institutions, and empower selected schools for a brighter future.
“We are driven by a symbol and a profound mission to establish a more progressive and empowered Botswana for all,” he said
He said by investing in the future leaders of the nation, they believed they could achieve this mission.
Further, he said they recognised that a community’s strength lies in its ability to support and uplift each other in times of need.
Therefore, he said the initiative embodie their core values and signifies their dedication to giving back to the communities that have supported them.
The Adopt-A-School initiative is set to be rolled out in four stages across the country where Trans Africa shops are located. Each stage according to Mr Baby aimed to make a meaningful impact on the lives of selected schools and communities.
The first stage, Back-To-School, will provide school essentials and Trans-themed supplies to support and encourage students as they start their academic year.
Subsequent stages will involve sponsoring prizes, providing examination care packages for primary school leavers, and tailoring support based on specific needs agreed upon by the schools and Trans.
Together, they believe they can drive positive change, uplift schools and communities, and empower individuals to reach their full potential.
The focus is on creating a brighter future for all and building a more progressive and empowered Botswana for future generations. Ends
