Reformation of UN key - Kwape
07 May 2024
Botswana is forthright in the reformation of the United Nations, says Minister for Foreign Affairs in an interview Monday on the sidelines of the US-Africa Business Summit.
Therefore, Dr Lemogang Kwape said President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi would converse with the United States of America Special Representative in the UN on the composition of the United Nations Security Council.
Also, the minister said President Masisi would also have an opportunity during the US-Africa Business Summit to meet up with businesses that could forge partnerships with companies that would help the country harness solar to generate electricity as well as Space X and manoeuvre possible utilisation of the company’s extra-terrestrial infrastructure or satellites.
Dr Kwape was happy that other than ministers and government officials, Botswana privately-owned companies had tagged along and would have the opportunity to network, exchange notes with interested parties and more likely sign deals that could inject money into the Botswana economy for the benefit of Batswana.
However, Dr Kwape was quick to underscore that due care would be exercised so that everything was conducted within the remits of the law and to ensure that Batswana derived benefits from the likely cooperation.
As per the norm, President Masisi is billed to meet Batswana staying in Dallas to appraise them on pertinent issues back at home including encouraging them to utilise their right to vote during this year’s general elections.
Although President Masisi’s work visit has not come to a close in the US, Minister Kwape said it was a success.
Meanwhile, Botswana’s finest minds and tech-geeks should embrace themselves for interesting times as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has acceded to set up Botswana.
This follows a recent visit by President Masisi to the campus in Boston, United States of America where he expressed Botswana’s profound love and wish to collaborate with the institution in the technological space.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology was founded to accelerate the US’ industrial revolution that has groomed talented people who have in turn done exploits in research and technology, launched new industries and created millions of jobs through research and innovation.
It is President Masisi’s desire that forging synergies with thought leaders such as MIT will leapfrog Botswana’s transformational agenda of a knowledge-based and digitised economy. ENDS
