Restore order in schools - Dr Letsholathebe
05 May 2024
Minister of Education and Skills Development, Dr Douglas Letsholathebe says action must be taken to address the challenging environment and restore order in schools.
Addressing St John Apostolic Church of Botswana congregation life changing dinner in Francistown on Saturday, Dr Letsholathebe said the classroom was increasingly becoming a volatile location.
“If we do not take steps to address the underlying issues, we may soon find ourselves facing a situation where the classroom becomes a battleground between teachers and students.”
He said a cordial relationship must prevail between teachers and students.
“We cannot afford to let this happen. We must work together as a community to ensure that our schools remain safe and nurturing environments for our children,” said Dr Letsholathebe.
Also, he said church was not a gathering of Christian fellowship but was a pillar of the community that played a crucial role in the social and moral development of the youth.
“You must provide guidance, support and direction for children, help them grow into responsible and compassionate adults,” he added.
Dr Letsholathebe indicated that churches also provided a sense of belonging and unity that was essential for fostering peace and harmony within the community.
He said the critical role played by faith-based organisations such as the St John Apostolic Church in building a responsible nation was recognised by government.
He added that they contributed to the growth and development of the society.
“Churches play a vital role in shaping our communities and fostering a sense of compassion, love, and unity that is essential for a strong and prosperous nation.
“We must work hand-in-hand with these institutions to ensure that our children grow up in a society that values morality, peace, and respect for others,” he said.
He also urged the congregation to make full use of the various government programmes and policies designed to improve their lives.
“The government is here to support you and your families and I urge you to take advantage of the opportunities available to you through these programmes,” he added.
Dr Letsholathebe also encouraged those who had not yet registered to vote to take advantage of the coming supplementary voter registration to be eligible to vote in the coming General Elections.
Bishop Toteng Matenge said the church would continue to serve the community of Francistown and surrounding areas with dignity and distinction to change their lives for the better.
Bishop Matenge said the church would continue to do its work and offer its support to government in addressing social ills, especially among the youth.
Assistant District Commissioner, Mr Patrick Isaac hailed the church for promoting the spirit of self-reliance and community building.
“It is truly heartening to see a congregation that takes such pride in their ability to provide for themselves and their neighbours,” he said. ENDS
