05 May 2024
President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has reaffirmed Botswana’s commitment to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed last year by Botswana and The Bahamas intended to foster economic development and ensure mutual benefit.
President Masisi said this when conversing with The Bahamas Prime Minister, Mr Philip Davis during the Global Citizen Now summit in New York on Thursday.
Among others, the MoU commits the two countries to cooperate on areas of economic development, cultural relations, environment, tourism, agriculture and financial services.
President Masisi stated that Botswana and The Bahamas had a lot of similarities such as peace and democracy, vibrant economies and robust tourism sectors that could be leveraged to scale up development. He further said existential challenges that included climate change called for deepened collaborations between nation-states and companies alike to find lasting solutions that benefit people. Mr Davis pointed out that the MoU presented opportunities for citizens of both The Bahamas and Botswana.
The Global Citizen Now summit follows right after the Legatum Centre Conference at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts where President Masisi expressed government’s wish to forge synergies to leverage research and technology to hasten Botswana’s development path.ends
