Maun hosts World Health and Safety Day at Work

Preparation are in full swing for commemoration of World Health and Safety Day at Work, scheduled for Maun Sports Complex on Sunday.
The event will bring together professionals concerned with health and safety in the workplace and the Minister of Labour and Home Affairs, Ms Anna Mokgethi is expected to officiate.
Deputy District Commissioner Mr Boammaruri Otlhogile confirmed in a n interview that the preparations for the day were at an advanced stage.
“We have representatives from the community, public sector unions, Business Botswana and other stakeholders to ensure that every sectors of the community is represented,” he said.
He said health and safety regulations were meant to prevent injuries or accidents in the workplace.
Mr Otlhogile said the theme of the event: The Impacts of Climate Change on Occupational Safety and Health, underscored critical intersections between environmental sustainability & workplace safety.
With climate change posing new challenges and risks to occupational health, the commemoration aims to raise awareness, foster dialogue and explore innovative solutions to safeguard workers in the face of a changing climate.
The day will commence with a health walk from Nandos, Old Mall to Maun Sports Complex.
According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the maiden commemorations of World Health and Safety Day at Work was in 2001 and the country joined the rest of the world in commemorating the day in 2023, with an event that was held in Jwaneng.
Other than presentations informing the nation of issues relating to safety and health in the work place, the event will be a networking platform with the view to enrich understanding of issues at hand and to inspire action towards creating safer and healthier workplaces. Ends
