In an effort to address gender disparities and promote inclusivity within local governance, Botswana Association of Local Authorities recently organised a capacity-building workshop for gender commissioners and focal persons.

The workshop, held in Maun on April 3, aimed to enhance participants' understanding of gender issues and equip them with necessary skills to drive positive change in their communities.

Speaking at the event, North West District Council chairperson Councillor Itumeleng Kelebetseng said through such engaging activities and collaborative learning opportunities, attendees would gain practical tools and resources to advocate for gender equality and social justice within their communities.

Reflecting on the workshop, Ms Peggy Ramaphane, a national gender commissioner from Women Against Rape expressed enthusiasm and commitment to applying the knowledge and skills gained to promote gender equality and empower marginalised groups within the community.

"We need to recognise even our elder groups when we talk about gender-based violence as they are equally affected but we tend to forget them when we talk about these issues and we are here to talk about inclusion of all," she said.

She said when participants returned to their respective local authorities, they carried with them a renewed sense of purpose and determination to effect positive change in their communities.

Otsile Mapeu from gender affairs department stressed the importance of local government in promoting gender equality by ensuring equal access to resources, opportunities and decision making by all genders.

“For equal participation, local authorities are to encourage women’s participation in decision-making bodies, community organisations and leadership roles as well as adopt and strengthen policies and legislation for gender equality,” he said. Ends
