The evolving regional and international conflicts situation across the world more than ever before require a modernised defence force, says the Commander of the Botswana Defence Force (BDF), Lt General Placid Segokgo.

Addressing the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) Senior Officers 19th Strategic Conference at Glen Valley on Wednesday, Lt General Segokgo said as a custodian of national security, the BDF must be in a position to deal with any emerging and eminent security threats.

He said the BDF must demonstrate its unwavering commitment to national interest and priorities through their actions.

Lt General Segokgo said the conference, which was attended by more than 330 BDF senior officers, resonated well with government policy direction to improve work ethics and service delivery.

He added that the conference would come up with innovative ideas to enhance defence and security adding that the BDF was ready to defend the country’s territorial integrity.

He said the BDF has proved to be a capable force to deliver peace and security.

Lt General Segokgo said the BDF must be fully aware of the task at hand and resonate well with national interests and uphold political neutrality.

He said it was important that in its activities the BDF must be guided by the rule of law.  

Lt General Segokgo pointed out that over the years, the BDF had made significant strides in developing its capacity by acquiring the requisite military equipment, therefore enhancing its ability to deal with modern and emerging security threats.

He added that the Botswana Defence Force Act (2018) which was under review was expected to among others increase retirement age of BDF members by at least two years.

On the deployment of the BDF to a peace-keeping mission in Mozambique, Lt. General Segokgo disclosed that the Botswana troops have been a valuable addition to the mission.

Lt General Segokgo said being part of the peace keeping mission had provided the BDF with the much needed training and readiness, and gave the members tactical and much needed experience to be at par with emerging and future security challenges. ENDS
