Maun to have pre-paid stand pipes
13 Feb 2013
Plan are underway to roll out pre-paid standpipes to Maun, the Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) spokesperson, Ms Matida Mmipi has said.
Speaking at a recent consultative meeting, Ms Matida Mmipi said the project had already been done in Molepolole and was already underway in Mahalapye.
She indicated that people who would not afford to connect water to their standpipes would buy tokens and as for destitute people, they would liaise with social workers in their areas.
“The service is similar to the one used for prepaid electricity,” she said. She indicated that disadvantaged communities would continue to get water for human consumption.
“I want to caution people that just because we are taking over from water affairs department, it does not mean that water shortage will be a thing of the past. We promise to do our best and fulfill our vision of aspiring to be a leader in utility services,” she said.
For his part, Kgosi Oleyo Ledimo said it was commendable for WUC to introduce itself to the village leadership.
He said as it would be the case with every new partnership, people had different thoughts and expectations. “Some positive some negative and at the end of the day we should give them a chance and see where they are taking us,” he said. ENDS
