Residents discontent with state of infrastructure
13 Apr 2025
Residents of Makolo in Serowe expressed great discontent with the state of infrastructure in their ward noting that the bad state of roads and poor water drainage weigh heavily on them.
Speaking during a kgotla meeting addressed by Serowe South Member of Parliament, Mr Lesedi Leepetswe recently, residents said the absence of a fire engine in Serowe was a setback. They said, in the event of emergency, everything would be reduced to ashes pending a fire engine from either Palapye or Mahalapye.
Residents also said water drainage system needed an overhaul.
They said some manholes that emitted wastewater remained neglected for an extended period while some remained open, posing a safety hazard.
Moreover, residents raised concerns about increasing livestock theft at the cattle post.
This, they said greatly impacted farmers, the majority of whom being pensioners without any source of income, aside from old age pension and livestock sales.
Serowe Umbrella VDC chairperson, Mr Matthews Motelebane said Makolo Primary School needed a revamp and a new block to accommodate Pre-primary learners. He said it had been years since VDC had been advocating for endorsement of this development in the NDP12, without success.
He emphasised that education at the grassroots level should be prioritised.
Area MP, Mr Leepetswe, assured residents that their grievances would be addressed in due course.
He made residents aware of changes such as transfer of clinics to local government ministry the move he said would improve efficiency and optimal utilisation of resources. He therefore pleaded with Batswana for patience, promising improvement with time.
He urged the community to work as a team, reasoning that for development and prosperity to materialise, all hands needed to be on the deck. ENDS
