Restore cultural practices - Khama IV
31 Mar 2025
Communities of Tutume District under Gammangwato jurisdiction have been urged to revive and restore their cultural practices.
Addressing a kgotla meeting in Tutume recently, Kgosi Khama IV said it was upon dikgosi in the region to arrange cultural activities for their tribes to showcase culture. He also encouraged Tutume district traditional leaders to engage schools management within their region to hold culture days for learners.
That way, he said it would help teach children their culture as some practices had been lost to modernisation and inter-relations, leading to young people adopting other people’s way of life.
Kgosi Khama IV further said teaching young children their own culture would help maintain continuity from generation to generation, adding it was also the obligation of communities to document their history.
On other issues, he encouraged communities to set up committees that would facilitate identification of attraction sites to be added into Botswana Tourism Organisation website.
“This will enable your communities to earn revenue which you can use for the developments of your areas without relying on government,” he said.
Kgosi Tapson Madikwe of Tutume thanked Kgosi Khama IV for his visit and message, concurring that many people had lost touch of their culture and adopted foreign ppractices. ENDS
