Tumelo Molefhi’s performance in the 2024 Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) examination has earned him respect from North West District councillors.
A product of Maun Senior Secondary School, Tumelo made the list of the country’s Top Achievers with six A*s, two As, one B and one D, totaling 48 points. This places him in position 16 out of 22 Top Achievers in the country, for the 2024 cohort, an accomplishment that saw councillors taking a moment during a full council session to recognise his efforts, more so that the district has been posting unimpressive academic results.
Councillors vowed to join forces with schools in their respective areas, to encourage good academic performance among learners. Mr Kelebetseng said in the five-year period since 2020 to date, Maun Secondary School results had been declining.
“These results are so hurting and as stakeholders we need to stand up and support the school. Let us encourage parents not to leave teaching to teachers alone because they are also critical in the learning of their children,” said Mr Kelebetseng.
He said it was important to celebrate and recognise learners who were excelling and making the district proud. With regard to JCE results, Mr Kelebetseng said the district registered a slight improvement of 0.09 per cent with Maitlamo Junior Secondary School outperforming other schools.
He noted that the school had been having the highest results since 2022 in the region getting between 46 per cent and 50 per cent with the highest performance of 50 percent in 2022 and for 2024 examinations they scored 49.7 per cent. Mr Kelebetseng said that good working relations between the village leadership, school management and other stakeholders could help schools perform better in future. ENDS
