Selebi Phikwe airport suitable for cargo

Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure is in the process of facilitating a private investor, called 123 Dimension Proprietary Limited, who identified Selebi Phikwe Airport as a potential candidate for an international cargo airport.
Responding to a question in parliament, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Mr Noah Salakae said after refurbishment, the airport would be designed to handle small commercial airliners, such as ATR Aircrafts that Air Botswana operated or equivalent.
However, the minister said the development or refurbishment of any airport was justified by business case in a particular location. “At present moment, there isn’t any business that warrants the refurbishment of the airport, because over the past three years, from 2021/2022 to 2023/2024, the airport received an average of 64 aircraft per annum and 205 passengers per annum,” he said.
This, he said translated to one aircraft and less than a passenger daily.
Selebi-Phikwe East MP, Mr Kgoberego Nkawana, had asked the minister to state the ministry’s plans to refurbish Selebi Phikwe Airport and the type and size of aircrafts that would land at the airport after completion of the refurbishment. ENDS
