Early detection and treatment prevents blindness

05 Mar 2025

Diabetic retinopathy, a severe complication of diabetes, remains one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide.

However, medical experts agree that early detection and timely treatment can significantly reduce the risk of vision loss. Mpona Innovative Health Solutions managing director, Dr Boitshepo Mosweu told BOPA that to address this pressing health concern, Mpona developed an Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered retinal screening solution that enabled virtual consultations by eye specialists.

He said the initiative aimed to provide patients in rural areas with access to eye screening services without the need for long-distance travel.

"Our goal is to make tele-retinal screening available across most parts of the country," said Dr Mosweu, explaining that they were planning a countrywide tele-retinal screening tour the aim of which was to combat the increasing prevalence of diabetes-related eye conditions in Botswana.

He explained that by providing access to vital eye screening services, they hoped to catch the disease in its early stages and reduce the long-term impacts of diabetic retinopathy. Dr Mosweu stated that the screenings were a game-changer for patients who might not have the means to travel to urban centres for eye exams.

“By detecting diabetic retinopathy early, we can initiate treatments that are proven to preserve vision and prevent more serious complications," he said.

In addition to the screenings, he said educational materials on managing diabetes and protecting eye health would be provided. The free screenings will begin at Gweta Primary Hospital on March 4, followed by Nata Clinic on March 5.

The plan is to expanding the programme to other regions across the country, Dr Mosweu said and encouraged those with diabetes to take advantage of the opportunity to protect their eyesight and improve their overall quality of life.  ENDS
