02 Mar 2025

At least thirteen  graves have been discovered at land servicing projects in Ghanzi at Block 1-6 and Block 7.

The discovery of the graves has led to the temporary suspension of Ministry of Water and Human Settlement land servicing projects to allow due processes to be followed and exhumation to take place.

In an interview, Technical Service Director, Mr Gabalemogwe Moanakwena revealed that, the exhumation commenced on Friday with one body that was reburied at D’kar, adding that they would be conducting two more reburials in the same village.

Mr Moanakwena explained that through consultations with District Commissioner and Kgosi, they identified six family members of the deceased and still awaiting consent from the families of the remaining seven.

He said their consent would allow them to continue with the exhumation and reburials at the cemeteries of their choice.

Furthermore, he said upon completion of the exercise the projects activities would resume.

Meanwhile, D’kar Village Development Committee chairperson, Ms Nnanaki Ditsheko applauded the government for their consultations with the affected families to allow smooth proceedings.

She also commended the family for accepting that their deceased bodies be buried at their ancestral lands.

For her part, the Archeologist Consultant, Ms Grace Fusi said they were in collaboration with the host ministry to carry out the exhumation exercise that he estimated might be concluded soon provided all the affected families give  consent.

Department of Technical Services under the Ministry of Water and Human Settlement, is undertaking land servicing projects at Block 1-6 and Block 7 in Ghanzi.

The two projects would provide serviced commercial and residential land, power supply, internal roads, water supply and distribution of networks as well as waste water treatment plant and sanitation services. ENDS
