No reason to panic meteorology

25 Feb 2025

The Department of Meteorological Services weather forecast does not support claims regarding the recent heavy rainfall warnings from SADC.

Chief Technical Officer at Department of Meteorological Services, Ms Didimalang Seikaneng said while SADC had communicated concerns about potential heavy rains, local observations indicate that the weather patterns here did not align with those predictions.

“Our forecasts suggest that up to the March 6, the country will experience normal rainfall,” she said, adding that, ‘currently, there is a noticeable reduction in rainfall due to a depression that is drawing moisture from Southern Africa’.

The meteorological department anticipates mostly isolated thunderstorms across various regions, particularly in Kgalagadi, Southern, South-East, Kgatleng and Kweneng from the February 27 to March 2.

Specifically, Ms Seikaneng said scattered thundershowers were expected in Chobe from February 25 to 28. She also addressed the situation that SADC is concerned about; clarifying that it pertained to a depression in the Mozambique Channel.

“At this moment, it is not classified as a cyclone,” she explained, adding that it was expected to move southeast towards Madagascar and eventually dissipate in the ocean. ENDS
