Suspend old age pension allowance for serving MPs councillors - Monageng

23 Feb 2025

Mr Shima Monageng, Member of Parliament for Molepolole South, has appealed for the temporary suspension of Old Age Pension allowances for serving Members of Parliament and councillors currently on government payroll.

He emphasised that such pensions should only resume at the end of the officials’ tenure.

This, he said  could significantly reduce the government wage bill and assist in channeling more resources to those truly in need. “This initiative would support the government’s budget objectives, which aim to strengthen oversight and governance, enhance service delivery, and foster a more diversified economy,” he stated.

The MP stressed the importance of attracting investors who align with the government’s vision of creating employment and achieving food security.

“We must work on doing more with less, stop praising challenges, and move forward,” he remarked. He highlighted the need for Botswana to reduce its dependence on diamond revenue, advocating for the development of tourism, manufacturing, and creative industries. According to Mr Monageng, the creative sector holds significant potential for job creation, particularly for the youth.

Furthermore, he urged the government to prioritise responsibility and accountability, combat corruption, and focus on developing a sustainable economy. “We cannot move forward without prudent financial management,” he noted.

Despite the proposals, Mr Monageng pointed out that the Molepolole community still faced pressing challenges, including shortages of potable water, sewerage, and sanitation networks. He criticised the P60 million allocated for the Molepolole Police Station, deeming it inadequate for establishing anything more than a police post. “The community is increasingly concerned about the rising crime rates, highlighting the urgent need for a well-resourced police station,” he said.

On health issues, the MP raised alarms about the Gamodubu landfill, which he described as a health hazard.

He indicated that flies from the landfill have been invading nearby homesteads, noting that the facility appears to have surpassed its intended lifespan. ENDS
