23 Feb 2025
A total of 1 463 murder cases have been reported over the past five years since 2020 to 2024, Parliament has learnt.
Minister for State President, Mr Moeti Mohwasa said among these, six of the victims were found with missing parts, but it cannot be determined if they were ritual murders, nine suspects had been arrested and the cases were before the courts.
He said some of the murder victims were at some point reported as missing persons by their families.
To address this, he said, Botswana Police Service was reviewing its Missing Persons’ policies and procedures with a view to improve investigation processes, information management as well as family liaison.
Mr Mohwasa was responding to questions from Molepolole North MP Mr Arafat Khan who asked the ministry about number of reported ritual murder cases in the past five years and if there were plans to address the problem given government’s human rights approach. ENDS
