Government should focus on maintenance
18 Feb 2025
Dilapidated government facilities as a result of lack of maintenance have been identified as one of the priority areas that the new government should focus on.
Member of Parliament for Tswapong North and Minister of Higher Education, Mr Prince Maele said in his response to the Budget Speech yesterday, indicating that a large portion of the budget must go toward maintenance of government infrastructure facilities like schools, roads and health facilities, adding that government budget must be biased towards maintenance works.
Another priority, Mr Maele said should be on response and management disasters measures. Also, he said funds should be availed for stormwater drainage, adding that villages in Tswapong were prone to flooding.
Mr Maele said initial steps taken by Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) within three months indicated that the new government was destined to deliver and revive the economy. He said government should do away with financial leakages as substantial amounts of money could not be accounted for.
He added that infrastructural development such as expansion of road networks, power grid and railway lines were paramount to improving livelihoods and the economy. Furthermore, he said Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) should be prioritised as its development could empower locals with vocational skills and could help diversify the economy. ENDS
