Botswana Golden Grand Prix April
16 Feb 2025
Botswana Golden Grand Prix is scheduled to take place on April 12 at the National Stadium.
The grand prix that did not take place last year due to a legal battle, has been included in World Athletics calendar for this year.
According to information in the World Athletics website, the meet director will be Glody Dube while the Athletes Liaison is Robert Wagner.
The meet’s events will include the men’s 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 400m hurdles and long jump, shot put and 4 x100 metres relays.
Female athletes will compete in 100m, 400m, 800m, 400m, long jump and shot put.
Botswana Golden Grand Prix spokesperson, Callistus Kolantsho said in an interview that they were working round the clock to prepare for the event.
“This will be our second edition, which we could have held last year, but due to circumstances that were beyond our control, we were not able to host the event,” he said.
Kolantsho said World Athletics had given them a three-year contract, adding that this was supposed to be their third and final year as a gold meet, before being assessed to determine whether they could be promoted to Diamond League or demoted to sliver meet.
“But we are excited after the mix up we saw earlier this year when another meet was to be hosted by Botswana at the same day and venue,” he said.
Now that ‘the storm is over’, although there was little time left, he said, they would work hard to deliver a successful meet.
He said they were expecting a lot of international athletes who had overtime shown interest to come and compete in Botswana.
Currently, he said, the event athletes liaison officer was sending invitations to athletes, and negotiating with best athletes who had competed at the Olympics.
“We thank the Minister of Sport and Arts Jacob Kelebeng and other stakeholders who intervened for us to host the event,” he said. ENDS
