Botswana to engage US counterparts
13 Feb 2025
The government of Botswana remains calm despite an array of executive orders signed by the United States president Mr Donald Trump recently.
Since his second ascent to the US presidency, Mr Trump has signed various orders including foreign aid cut, albeit temporarily, that has many worried that it may reverse Botswana’s progress made over the years in the health space.
Minister of International Relations, Dr Phenyo Butale acknowledged that the government has heard of such orders but would not comment on the latest developments until they engage their United States counterparts on the matter.
He said this during an interview with BOPA at the ongoing 38th African Union summit held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
‘‘We have warm and cordial relations with the US government and has over the many years of our solid friendship developed platforms where we engage each other on matters of mutual benefit, and cooperation,’’ he said adding that Botswana would therefore not jump the gun but engage the Americans on their foreign policy stance.
