Land records management essential

Kgatleng Land Board members have been implored to keep a well-functioning land inventory as an essential component of land administration.

Kgatleng Land Board deputy chairperson, Mr Boniface Matshuba said during the opening of a two-week long board. rhat good record keeping should be maintained.

Mr Matshuba urged the estate office to keep a register of land acquired by the land board in terms of hectarage, as well as a register from the relevant office that reflected how much land was planned for allocation in relation to the land acquired.

Furthermore, he said, the land board should keep track of the number of plots allocated against the number of plots planned for in a layout.

“We should be aware that the land board processes feed into one another, and if any of them fail, it causes a chain reaction that results in a failure,” he said.

He urged members to undertake tasks in accordance with established timelines and procedures and to be mindful of the fact that they were dealing with a resource with significant contribution to the economy.

He also encouraged members to act promptly in allocating available land and to further apprise the public about unavailability of land for allocation.

Mr Matshuba urged the land board management to begin the process of advertising available business plots to the public, adding that this would generate revenue through those plots, and at the same time improve the lives of Batswana.

The meeting was also updated that so far 177 of the 1 956 individual plots had been conveyanced through Land Information System (LIS) from July to September 2024.

He also asked members to develop initiatives that would speed up the process of conveyancing plots and generate better outcomes, adding that LIS enabled government to generate some reliable data for land management.

Regarding land board financial status, he urged officials to speed up lease rental arrears despite limited resources.

Land board secretariat was also implored to deal with customer complaints by registering them to provide feedback to your clients as quickly as possible.

For their part, members decried shortage of resources, office space and manpower for facilitation of Secure Land Title certification. ENDS
