Red Cross aids flood victims

The Botswana Red Cross Society (BRCS) has started distributing disaster response packages to the floods victims in the North West District.

A number of households in Maun, Nxaraga, Tsau and Semboyo collapsed due to flooding while some yards were not easily accessible to following torrential rains in the area recently. 

The BRCS head of operations and business development, Ms Boitumelo Cornelius-Moloi, confirmed that the team was on the ground providing crucial relief to families affected by the floods. 

She said they were distributing 100 relief items consisting mattresses, blankets and hygiene packs. She said 20 families benefited in Nxaraga, Tsau and Semboyo while 35 packages were distributed in Maun and Morutsha settlement respectively. 

She said the response efforts were carried out in accordance with guidance from the District Disaster Response Committee.

In addition, Ms Cornelius-Moloi said BRCS provided cash support to enable families to get basic supplies such as food, school supplies for children and other needs that may arise. 

“This support will be for two months with each family benefiting P1 000,” she said. 

Also, she said BRCS had extended relief distribution to affected areas in Boteti such as Mokoboxane adding that more relief efforts were planned for Serowe, Mahalapye, Tonota districts as well as Francistown.

This, Ms Cornelius-Moloi said highlighted BRCS’s continued commitment to ensuring that assistance reached the most affected communities across the country. ENDS
