Government prioritises employee welfare - Hunyepa

09 Feb 2025

The Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) government has reaffirmed its commitment to a human-rights centered approach, with a particular focus on addressing staff welfare issues.

This commitment was emphasised by Assistant Minister of Higher Education, Mr Justin Hunyepa, during his visit to Ngethu Brigade recently. Mr Hunyepa expressed his desire to understand the challenges faced by both staff and students at the institution. He stated that the government aimed to enhance the working and living standards for public employees to boost motivation and productivity.

“Improving the quality of education means not just focusing on students, but also ensuring our staff have the support they need,” Mr Hunyepa said, highlighting the importance of maintaining school facilities, staff housing, and boarding amenities.

He called for an educational curriculum that equipped students with skills relevant to the industry, which he believed would empower them to contribute significantly to public infrastructure maintenance. Such initiatives, he explained, could reduce maintenance costs for government and redirect funds toward essential services like student allowances.

While advocating for students to understand their rights, Mr Hunyepa stressed the importance of responsibility and urged against vandalism of property. He encouraged collaboration between the Student Representative Council (SRC) and school management to address and advance student issues, promoting responsible behaviour among the student body.

The assistant minister also proposed that the institution considered incorporating crop production programmes which would benefit both students and the school financially and educationally. He challenged the school management to seek partnerships with local leaders, councils, and private companies to overcome current challenges.

Ngethu Brigade Principal Mr Chawa Manyathelo provided insights into the institution’s staffing and student body, noting that it employed 35 staff members, including seven teachers, and supports a total of 59 students. He highlighted the need for some temporary staff to be transitioned to permanent, pensionable positions and urged government to expedite progression for those already employed on a permanent basis.

Mr Manyathelo also expressed concerns about the low enrolment in certain programmes and observed a lack of commitment to academic performance among some students.

Staff representative Mr Oratile Sebadieta voiced the ongoing challenges of delayed staff progression and lecturer shortages, indicating these issues hindered educational quality.

Additionally, SRC President Mr Innocent Tau called for the reintroduction of sports activities and prize-giving ceremonies to boost student motivation and foster a more engaging school environment. ENDS
