Man drowns in Okavango River after crocodile attack

Police in Shakawe are investigating an incident in which a 41-year-old man drowned after being attacked by a crocodile while crossing Okavango River on Friday.
Acting station commander, Assistant Superintendent Babinang Banohi confirmed the incident in an interview, noting that they received a report Friday afternoon and immediately assembled a team comprising of the police and Botswana Defense Force to embark on a massive search.
He said it was reported that the victim was boarding a traditional canoe with two other men, searching for missing cattle in small islands alongside the river.
While on their mission, he said a crocodile attacked the trio and pulled the hand of the man peddling the canoe, which caused it to lose its balance and capsize.
Assistant Superintendent Banohi further said the man attacked by the crocodile fought back until the crocodile released him and together with the one of his colleagues managed to swim while the third one drowned.
The victim, he said was rushed to JP Kavindama Hospital where he is repucarating while the search for the drowned man continues.
"We had to stop the search yesterday because of darkness and continued this morning (Sunday),” he added. ENDS
