Gaborone United head coach Dimitar Pantev says his team is moving closer to its peak performance following its display against TAFIC yesterday evening.
The Reds climbed to the top of the FNB Premiership after registering a hard fought 2-1 home victory over Matjimenyenga at a packed BPSC Stadium.
GU took the lead through Liberian midfielder Sheikh Sesay in the 66th minute.
However, TAFIC equalised in the 81st minute through lanky defender Shanganani 'Sporo' Ngada.
The equalising goal propelled GU to up its game and quickly restored the lead two minutes later through captain Lebogang Ditsele to secure victory.
It was the third victory in a row for GU since appointing Pantev as head coach and they are now firmly in contest for the league title.
In a postmatch interview, Pantev commended his team for collecting maximum points against a difficult opponent which was equally determined for win.
Pantev said they were focusing on maintaining the momentum in the coming league games.
Meanwhile, TAFIC head coach Elias Chinyemba voiced his displeasure regarding what he saw as below par performance of match officials.
Chinyemba claimed that his team scored a clear goal at the start of the second half, but it was unfortunate that the match official somehow disallowed the goal.
Chinyemba however indicated that his players played their hearts out and were only let done by poor decision making when presented with clear cut chances as well as allowing the opponent to penetrate their defence and scoring goals.
However, Chinyemba commended GU for playing their hearts out and eventually getting all the three points.
After playing 18 games, GU is now at the summit of the log with 36 points. The win has relegated Township Rollers to position two with same number of points.
However, Rollers would move back to the top if they could beat Orapa United at Itekeng Stadium this afternoon.
One other team currently eyeing to end the weekend at the top of the elite league is Jwaneng Galaxy which welcomes Sua Flamingos to the Galaxy Stadium this afternoon. Jwaneng Galaxy is now fourth with 33 points. ENDS
