04 Feb 2025

Women Against Rape (WAR) recently launched an initiative dubbed, Ke Sa Le Ngwana Go Nna Motsadi, to address the rising rate of teenage pregnancy in the Ngamiland District.

The initiative which is set to run from January to December will engage young people in dialogue on the challenges and responsibilities of parenthood, while also providing them with the necessary tools to make informed choices regarding their sexual health.

Speaking at the launch in Maun, WAR project officer, Ms Bobedi Samoxhese said the initiative sought to sensitise parents on the importance of building friendly relationships with their children as well as providing support to teenage mothers.

“Teenage pregnancy not only impacts the health and well-being of our youth but also affects our communities hence the need to come together and educate our young people about the implications of early parenthood and empower them to make better choices," said Ms Samoxhese.

She also highlighted that through the initiative they would create a safe space for the youth to learn about their options and understand their emotions as well as instil good moral values through the Comprehensive Sexuality Education.

Community outreach programmes will be established to provide ongoing support and resources to teenage mothers who are currently facing the challenges of motherhood and the workshops will cover topics such as financial literacy, parenting skills, and mental health, equipping young parents with the skills they need to succeed, Ms Samoxhese said.

Kgosi Tifles Wellio of Boseja and Kubung wards urged community leaders to form collaborations in tackling this issue.

“We can achieve more when we unite. It being our responsibility to guide our youth and provide them with the knowledge they need to make safe choices,” he said.

For her part acting principal education officer - Guidance and Counselling, Ms Baone Ditlou stated that unplanned pregnancy had always been a thorn in the society especially in Ngamiland hence the need for such initiatives.

Meanwhile, WAR has a long-standing history of working with members of the community and schools in Maun and Botswana in various platforms to promote gender-equality and building the capacity of women and children to live violence free lives.

The initiative has garnered support from various stakeholders, including the French Embassy through BOCONGO. ENDS
