The University of Botswana (UB) and Drones for Africa have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) marking the beginning of a strategic partnership aimed at integrating drone technology into education, research and the technology industry.

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Gaborone recently, Drones for Africa managing director, Ms Marang Mbaakanyi emphasised the significance of the partnership and highlighted the potential of drone technology in revolutionising industries, creating new opportunities for students, and positioning Botswana at the forefront of technological advancement.

“We are no longer just consumers of technology, we are becoming creators of technology. Our young minds will not merely observe the future, they will build it, engineer it, and soar beyond it,” said Ms Mbaakanyi.

She stated that the collaboration between Drones for Africa and UB was expected to foster research and development, facilitate practical training programmes, and equip students with hands-on experience in drone technology.

Shedding light on the initiative, Ms Mbaakanyi said it aimed to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and industry applications by ensuring that graduates were well-prepared for the evolving technological landscape.

UB vice chancellor, Professor David Norris expressed optimism about the impact of the partnership on Botswana’s technological growth.

“This agreement represents more than words on paper, it is a commitment to driving innovation, fostering local talent, and creating new opportunities for our youth. Together, we will ensure that Botswana not only keeps pace with the global technological revolution but leads it,” he said.

The agreement, he said, aligned with Botswana’s broader vision to embrace digital transformation and technology-driven solutions in key sectors such as agriculture, security, logistics, and environmental management.

“As Botswana continues to embrace innovation, this partnership serves as a stepping stone toward a future where African solutions address African challenges,” he said. ENDS
