Debswana has made a significant contribution to education in Boteti region by donating eight fully furnished porta cabin classrooms valued at over P1.3 million to Rakops Junior Secondary School.
During the handover ceremony recently, Managing Director Mr Andrew Motsomi emphasised Debswana’s commitment to fostering a brighter future, despite the ongoing severe economic challenges faced by the diamond industry.
“We remain resolute in building a stronger future for generations to come,” he stated.
He explained that Debswana aimed to be a catalyst for enhancing educational, health, and livelihood outcomes for host communities within areas where it has mines.
He said this initiative sought to complement government efforts in creating better living conditions for local residents.
Mr Motsomi also revealed that Debswana had set a target to ensure that supported schools within their areas of influence achieved a ranking among the top 20 per cent of performing schools nationally by the year 2030.
“Our commitment to education is unwavering, and we look forward to seeing these classrooms contribute to improved academic performance at Rakops Junior Secondary School,” he stated.
As a move to realise this goal, Debswana conducted an education and skills future study in 2022 to establish improvement areas in 54 schools for their host communities.
The Member of Parliament for Boteti West, Mr Sam Digwa commended Debswana for the donation, stating that the project would improve the school’s academic performance.
Mr Digwa said it would reduce hindrances to learning, as learning was obstructed when teaching took place in an outdoor area. ENDS
