MP cautions against gender-based violence in families

Residents of Mochudi and Malotwana have been cautioned about disintegration of families due to gender-based violence (GBV). During consultative kgotla meetings recently, Kgatleng Central legislator, Mr Mpho Morolong implored residents to shun GBV at all costs.
He said GBV was the main cause for collapse of families and lawlessness of young people.
He said government was against GBV and had tasked leaders to lead war against GBV and be exemplary.
He said GBV was not just an isolated issue affecting individual as it has far-reaching implications that extended beyond the immediate victim.
“It sends ripples through families and cascades down to future generations,” he stressed.
Mr Morolong reasoned that victims of violence do not heal easily and urged parents to ensure their children do not witness violence in the home as they may grow up struggling to manage their emotions.
He said despite economic challenges, government was committed to finding partners that would help revive the economy.
He informed them that couple of programmes were being reviewed in order to be consistent with UDC manifesto including Chema Chema, Thuo Letlotlo and Ipelegeng.
He also thanked residents for voting for him, promising that he would do his best to represent them and would work closely with them in order to fulfil their aspirations where possible.
For their part, residents decried slow pace of development in their areas. At Malotwana, Village Development Committee chairperson (VDC), Ms Mmita Badubi said their village needed solar streetlights, storm water drainage systems and installation of speed humps on the road leading to a primary school.
She said despite the fact that their village was an agricultural area, it was short of capacitated agriculture demonstrators.
Ms Badubi warned that it was not safe to ferry government officials on private vehicles, but charged that in some instances they were forced to do so.
Resident of Malowana complained about the bush surrounding the railway line and requested for rehabilitation of a water well that was dug when the rail line was established long ago.
One of the residents, Ms Julia Ross implored government to develop a system that would encourage volunteers to continue serving their community members through volunteerism.
She said many residents have desisted from volunteering in programmes that uplifted community members because of lack of motivational allowances and amenities that facilitated such. As a red cross volunteer, she requested that government provided a porta cabin where she could assist members of her community during natural disasters.
In Mochudi, residents complained about lack of land for plot allocation.
Residents also requested government to enact a law that barred drugs from entering the country and to introduce some stern measures for drug users.
Residents also called for improvement of medicines availability in health facilities. Ends
