Dr Chiepe deserves to be honoured

Dr Gaositwe Chiepe has left Botswana a better place due to her countless contributions to the country's development,
therefore, it is fitting to rename Serowe College of Education in her honour.
Appealing to the government to consider this suggestion, former Foreign Affairs minister and Botswana Democratic Party Secretary General, Dr Lemogang Kwape stressed Dr Chiepe's vital role in shaping the nation's education system.
He said today many were educated and empowered, due to the foundation she laid.
In addition to her impact on education, Dr Chiepe also excelled in diplomatic roles, forging trade agreements and influencing various sectors in the country.
In the early 1960s, an era when girl empowerment was not widely recognised, Dr Gaositwe Chiepe's efforts became a beacon of hope.
A family member, Ms Kelebogile Lecoge, said Dr Chiepe pioneered the empowerment of girls by sponsoring them to attend boarding schools.
Ms Lecoge said the initiative resulted in three of the sponsored girls holding senior positions in society, which served as a testament to Dr Chiepe's vision and dedication.
Ms Lecoge also praised Dr Chiepe's humility, adding that she loved her family, served the nation selflessly and never boasted about her achievements. ENDS
