Assistant Minister of Higher Education, Mr Justin Hunyepa has commended Zwenshambe Brigade’s significant role in supporting the local community and youth development.
Mr Hunyepa met with students and faculty recently as part of a mission to recognise efforts of the brigade in Tati West Constituency.
He said the purpose of his visit was to appreciate the school’s contributions, rather than to pinpoint any faults within the organisation.
“The ministry is here to support you by gathering your ideas, understanding your challenges, and collaboratively mapping out solutions,” stated Mr Hunyepa.
He expressed a keen interest in hearing from the Student Representative Council (SRC) regarding the availability of resources such as textbooks, computers, internet connectivity, and teaching staff.
The Assistant Minister noted the importance of a conducive learning environment, which is crucial for students to achieve academically and positively represent the nation.
He also highlighted the need for courses offered at the brigade to be relevant to industry demands, aiming to prevent skills mismatch in the workforce.
In a move aimed at enhancing student motivation, Mr Hunyepa announced a significant increase in the students’ monthly allowance from P300 to P2 500.
This funding, he said, was expected to assist students in the maintenance of public infrastructure through internships and attachments at government facilities, which would involve practical work like the construction and maintenance of classrooms and staff accommodations.
“Supervision of these projects will be conducted by lecturers in collaboration with engineers and architects from the North East District Council,” explained Mr Hunyepa.
He encouraged students to use their financial support responsibly, urging them to avoid substance abuse.
Addressing youth engagement in sports, Mr Hunyepa encouraged students to pursue athletic opportunities, noting that many have the potential to become future gold medallists.
He promised support in providing grounds and equipment for training and competing both locally and internationally.
Moreover, he backed the SRC’s call for the availability of online access to students’ results, thereby facilitating easier access nationwide.
Presenting students concerns, SRC President Mr Nonofo Molatlhegi, asked for increase in monthly stipends to align with university students’ allowances.
He highlighted the need for official industrial attachments to be integrated into curricula and reported on critical issues like frequent power shortages that impact their educational experience.
Mr Molatlhegi also pointed to the lack of modern machinery for practical lessons, which hampers their readiness for the job market.
In response, Zwenshambe Brigade Principal, Ms Boitshepo Phiri, confirmed the current enrollment of 290 students but acknowledged the challenges posed by intermittent power outages and the inadequate accommodation for staff despite available campus space. ENDS
