Botswana football fraternity is mourning one of the respected referees, Anthony Ntogwa who passed away at Nyangabgwe Hospital on Sunday aged 67.
Known affectionately as ‘Pele’ in football circles, Ntogwa had been in and out of hospital for an extended period before his death.
His brother, Chenamani Ntogwa confirmed that Ntogwa who was admitted to hospital on Thursday, would be buried in Jakalas 2 on Saturday.
Fellow referee Keabetswe Dintwa recalled meeting Ntogwa in 2001 during a first division match in Francistown. Dintwa was the referee, with Ntogwa and Meshack Medupi serving as assistant referees.
Dintwa described Ntogwa as a humble and jovial person who approached his refereeing duties with unwavering professionalism and distinction.
Dintwa recounted a memorable premier league match in 2006 between TAFIC and Mogoditshane Fighters at the Francistown Council Stadium.
Ntogwa, officiating as assistant referee, awarded a goal to TAFIC, a decision met with protests from Fighters who accused him of being biased due to his perceived affiliation with TAFIC.
Despite the pressure, Ntogwa remained firm in his judgment. The match ended in a 2-all draw.
Medupi, a former referee and current FRAFA secretary seneral, spoke of Ntogwa’s significant influence on his career, crediting Ntogwa with shaping him into the person he is today.
He said he first met Ntogwa in 1996, while playing as a defender for TAFIC.
He noted that although Ntogwa was a staunch supporter of Rhinos FC (a Botswana Railways team where he worked), his commitment to fair officiating was undeniable.
Medupi described the late as one of the best referees Botswana ever produced, a ‘complete father figure’ and recalled Ntogwa’s generosity in using his own vehicle to transport referees across the country during a time when the Botswana Football Association lacked resources to do so. ENDS
