Official explains delay over Sakoyo land allocation
29 Jan 2025
Maun Sub-Land Board will allocate over 200 plots at Sankoyo starting March, the sub-land board chairperson, Mr Ogaufi Monamisi has revealed.
Mr Monamisi said from the 223 plots to be allocated, 194 would be residential, 11 commercial and seven civic and community use plots.
His response followed resident’s concerns over delays in allocation of residential plots and ploughing fields during a kgotla meeting yesterday.
He admitted that the sub-land board experienced delays pending approval of a detailed layout from the local council and informed the gathering that the layout was approved last year, paving the way for allocation.
Mr Monamisi also noted that they currently had 146 applicants on the waiting list for Sankoyo and pleaded with residents to exercise patience.
He said appointment of some board members also led to delays, noting that there had been a vacuum since 2023 until his appointment last year June.
As such we could not address pressing issues and I can now assure you that we are eager to speed up allocation to meet the needs of the people in the waiting list, he added.
Residents had also complained over delays in issuance of Deed of Customary Certificates noting that some other sub-land boards such as Nokaneng and Gumare were step ahead.
One of the concerned, Mr Phineas Mareja said he had been on the waiting list for a long time.
“We once wrote to the land board in 2015 expressing our grievances but it seems our efforts were in vain as there was no response or progress as far as our issues are concerned,” he said.
However, some residents called on the government to allow community trusts to negotiate for themselves in lease agreements with investors hoping that they could generate better profits and hold investors accountable.
By doing so, they said the community could elect the right people who could negotiate better deals for their benefit. ENDS
