In a significant step towards enhancing agricultural productivity in the region, the Ngamiland Rural Training Centre commenced a workshop this week focused on potato farming.
Outlining the objectives of the training, one of the facilitators and Acting Vice Principal for the Ngamiland Rural Training Centre, Mr Diphetogo Makuku stated that the workshop aimed to upskill participants and bridge the knowledge gap for farmers, empowering them with innovative techniques and sustainable practices to enhance their crop yields and overall productivity.
“Potato farming has potential to transform our community’s economy and not only does it provide food security, but it also creates job opportunities and enhances livelihoods. However, there’s a significant knowledge gap that we need to bridge to maximise these benefits, said Mr Makuku," he said.
He highlighted that the week-long workshop would focus on sustainable cultivation practices, pest management strategies, tools and equipment, diseases, and required temperature for successful potato production in Botswana.
Mr Makuku further added that the workshop aimed to address this knowledge gap by providing farmers with the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully grow potatoes year-round because with the right techniques, local farmers could enjoy higher yields, better quality produce, and increased revenue.
A local farmer specialising in agronomy, Ms Maitirelo Baatshwana expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to participate in the workshop.
“This workshop has not only inspired me to elevate my farming practices but has also fostered a sense of community among fellow farmers. I have even been encouraged to drill my own borehole,” she said.
Meanwhile, as part of its ongoing mission, the Ngamiland Rural Training Centre has outlined a plan to continue hosting additional workshops and training sessions throughout the year, focusing on various aspects of vegetable farming and other agricultural practices.
By bridging the knowledge gap, the centre hopes to empower local farmers with the tools they need to succeed in an ever-changing agricultural landscape. ENDS
