On Friday 24 January, Tloung ward residents in Kanye gathered at their kgotla for a historic announcement: the appointment of a new ward leader after a decade of pleading for representation.

Kgosi Sane Kgotlaetsile, Bangwaketse chief’s representative, officiated the announcement. He revealed that the appointment of the new leader, Ms Nankie Kgosiemang, had been approved by the Ministry of Local Government and Traditional Affair. 

Kgosi Kgotlaetsile offered guidance to the newly appointed leader.

“As a chief, you must refrain from politics and alcohol while on duty and always present yourself with dignity,” he said. 

He also urged Ms Kgosiemang to remain impartial, avoid taking bribes, and collaborate effectively with Kgosi Malope II and other ward leaders.

Member of Parliament for Kanye West, Mr Victor Phologolo commended the community for appointing a female leader, calling it a progressive step towards gender equality.

“This appointment is a reflection of our commitment to gender equality, especially during a time when our nation is grappling with alarming Gender-Based Violence,” Mr Phologolo said. 

He cited December’s national figures, which recorded 87 rape cases, 43 of which were defilement, as a call for stronger leadership to protect communities.

Mr Phologolo reassured residents that he would continue fulfilling promises that his government made before the general elections, including working toward legislative reforms. 

MP Phologolo also expressed confidence in Ms Kgosiemang’s ability to lead effectively.

In her first address as Tloung ward leader, Ms Kgosiemang expressed gratitude and vowed to serve her community with honesty and fairness.

“I am here for you and by you. I will be your voice, ears, and eyes, and I promise to lead with integrity,” she said. 

She committed to treating all residents equally, regardless of personal relationships, and assured them that she had taken the advice of her mentors to heart. ENDS
