Chombo urges youth to take charge of own destiny

Youth have been challenged to take ownership of their future.
Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs, Ms Lesego Chombo was speaking during a youth dialogue meeting at the Botswana National Youth Council on Friday.
“You must change your mindset and understand that no one is coming to rescue you,” Ms Chombo said, urging the youth to fight for their dreams with determination and perseverance.
Drawing from her own journey, Ms Chombo reflected on her rise from public schooling to becoming Miss Botswana, then Miss World Africa and ultimately her current role as a cabinet minister.
She recounted the challenges she faced, including limited support during her Miss Botswana journey and the sacrifices she made to fund her globally recognised Beauty with a Purpose project.
“Even with little support, I had to push myself. I used my own resources to make my project successful. If I can rise above challenges, so can you,” she said.
Ms Chombo also urged the youth to focus their energy on creating opportunities that aligned with their goals.
“Don’t despise yourselves or where you come from. Push forward and build the future you want,” she said.
She further reminded the youth of the importance of mental health, calling it the foundation of resilience and greatness.
“Take care of your mind, because that’s where your strength lies,” she said.
In addition, she urged the youth to take the issue of gender-based violence (GBV) serious and foster a culture of care and accountability.
“If you hear of a GBV threat, whether it’s a neighbour or someone else, it’s up to you to help the helpless,” she said.
On the youth dialogue, she said it was a platform for them to express their concerns and contribute ideas to guide the ministry’s agenda.
“I have hope and belief in you, and I trust that your ideas will help shape how we address youth issues,” she said. ENDS
