Botswana keen to learn from India

Botswana is keen to tap into India’s notable advancements in digital technology and green energy.

This was said by Minister for State President, Mr Moeti Mohwasa during India’s 76th independence celebration in Gaborone on Friday.

These sectors, he said were critical to both nations’ future development and offered significant opportunities for collaboration adding that Botswana was eager to learn from India’s advancement in digital technology as a valuable resource.

The minister also pointed out that such partnerships could greatly contribute to Botswana’s economy diversification efforts, as a key strategy for job creation and sustainable development.

He further reaffirmed that Botswana remained an attractive destination for India investment, underpinned by the country’s political stability and strong democratic framework.

Mr Mohwasa said the two countries had a shared strong and enduring historical bond rooted in mutual respect.

He said since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1966, they had witnessed transformative partnerships, evolving to encompass a broad range of areas, including defence, public health, education, security, cultural exchanges, technical assistance as well as trade and investment.

He also acknowledged the significant role that high level visits between the two nations had played in reinforcing their shared commitment to people-centred development.

The minister also said India was a home to a sizeable Indian diaspora, whose contributions were vital to the country’s socio economic progress adding that their active participation in various sectors continued to strengthen the bond between the two nations.

High Commissioner of India to Botswana, Mr Bharath Kumar Kuthati encouraged Botswana to explore opportunities on information technology, manufacturing, agriculture and tourism as potential areas to deepen economic ties.

He also reiterated that the relationship between India and Botswana was multifaceted, encompassing education, health care, trade and cultural exchanges amongst others.

“Initiatives such as the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation programme, ICCR scholarships, and defense cooperation reflect our commitment to capacity building and shared progress,” he said.

Ambassador Kuthati also pointed out that India was dedicated to supporting Botswana’s capacity-building initiatives, saying it was committed to sharing its progress and working closely with Botswana in achieving mutual growth. ENDS
