In an effort to align with global educational trends, Livingstone Kolobeng College (LKC), one of thye country’s independent secondary schools, has signed an agreement with the Confucius Institute at the University of Botswana (CIUB) to introduce Chinese as a second language for its students.
The Principal of LKC, Dr Jeff Ramsay said the pilot phase of the new language programme will begin this term, with Chinese language instruction incorporated into the Cambridge University International Examinations curriculum.
Dr Ramsay said the move positions LKC as the first secondary school in Botswana to offer Chinese language as a Cambridge examination subject, alongside its existing offerings of Setswana, French and English.
“This development demonstrates LKC’s commitment to broadening the academic and cultural horizons of our students,” he said.
Dr Ramsay said the partnership with the Confucius Institute will not only support the Chinese language, but will also foster cross-cultural exchange, enriching the school’s international curriculum and enhancing the global competitiveness of its students.
“The collaboration aims to enhance intellectual life, cultural development and academic exposure, while encouraging greater cooperation between the two educational institutions,” he said.
Dr Ramsay explained that the introduction of Chinese language education aimed to promote mutual understanding and cultural awareness between Botswana and China, as well as prepare students for future global opportunities by equipping them with the linguistic and cultural skills needed for careers in an interconnected world.
“We are thrilled to have this partnership, which reflects our ambition to be a global leader in international education,” he added. Dr Ramsay said by providing diverse language options, LKC was preparing students to thrive in an increasingly globalised environment.
Prof. Durong Pu, Chinese Director at Confucius Institute at the University of Botswana, also expressed excitement about the new initiative, describing it as a long-awaited development for both institutions.
Prof. Durong emphasised the value of learning Chinese, pointing out that it opens doors to numerous academic and career opportunities.
“Students will have the chance to participate in the ‘Chinese Bridge’ competition, a prestigious Chinese proficiency contest for secondary school students,” he said.
He said the national champion will receive a fully-sponsored trip to China to compete internationally, and the students will gain an advantage of securing scholarships to study in China after graduation.
Prof. Durong hailed the partnership for strengthening Botswana’s educational ties with China, paving the way for a new era of cultural exchange and academic excellence. ENDS
