Maele promises to improve MCE state
23 Jan 2025
Minister of Higher Education Mr Prince Maele has instructed the ministry to fill all vacant positions as quickly as possible.
Addressing staff during a visit to Molepolole College of Education (MCE), he was concerned that some vacancies had taken a long time to be filled despite being budgeted for.
He acknowledged the poor condition of the college’s infrastructure and student living conditions.
However, he praised the staff for their dedication and patience in the face of these challenges, noting that they were key to the success of the college.
Acknowledging the budget constraints, Mr Maele said the Ministry of Finance had reduced his ministry’s budget ceiling from P4.1 billion to P3.1 billion.
While acknowledging the financial constraints, Mr Maele stressed that the ministry was committed to finding solutions to the challenges facing the college.
He assured staff that the ministry would take swift action to address the issues and promised to provide feedback on all the issues discussed.
Principal of the college, Ms Bawisisi Nchabe briefed the minister on many challenges facing the institution, including lack of running water, dilapidated infrastructure, staff shortages, and insufficient funding.
She emphasised that insufficient funding was a major issue, compromising the quality of teaching and limiting the college’s potential.
Ms Nchabe called for urgent renovation of the college, which had not undergone major maintenance since its construction in 1985.
She expressed hope that with the necessary upgrades, the college could eventually attract international students.
Mr Matthews Sengwaketse, union representative, raised several issues.
He advocated for better staffing levels, further education opportunities for lecturers, and improved salaries that were competitive with universities.
Furthermore, he stressed the need for transformation of colleges to enhance their effectiveness and competitiveness in the higher education sector.
Student Representative Council (SRC) leader, Mr Sibusiso Oagile highlighted additional challenges faced by students such as dysfunctional ablutions, worn out beds and mattresses, and lack of furniture in the classrooms, forcing students to write on their laps.
He said there were no recreational or sporting facilities.
The college is set to celebrate its 40th anniversary this year. ENDS
