Red Cross assists cyclone victims

In response to the devastating impact of Cyclone Dikeledi, the Botswana Red Cross Society (BRCS) has stepped in with a generous donation to assist those affected by the disaster, providing mattresses, toiletries, and blankets.
Speaking in an interview after the donation in Mogoditshane recently, BRCS CEO Mr Kutlwano Mokokomani said the timely intervention highlighted the organisation’s unwavering commitment to humanitarian aid and underscored the importance of humanitarianism, especially in times of crisis.
Mr Mokokomani explained that Cyclone Dikeledi had left many communities struggling with widespread damage, displacement, and the destruction of homes and infrastructure.
“For the victims, access to basic necessities such as blankets, hygiene packs, and warmth is critical for both physical recovery and emotional support,” he said.
He noted that the donated mattresses provided much needed place for rest and recovery, especially since many families were forced to sleep in temporary shelters such as tents.
Additionally, the families received a once-off P1 000 cash donation to cover basic necessities, as most of their food was washed away by the heavy rains.
Mr Mokokomani said the Red Cross’s donation was aimed at providing relief and ensuring that survivors could maintain a sense of dignity during this challenging time.
“This generous act of support not only addresses the immediate needs of the victims, but also emphasises the importance of preserving human dignity in the face of adversity,” he said.
He said by focusing on fundamental needs, the Red Cross reinforced the idea that humanitarian aid was not just about survival, but also about maintaining dignity and offering people the means to preserve a sense of normalcy, even during the most difficult times.
He stated that providing basic needs for comfort in the aftermath of such a disaster could make a significant difference in helping individuals feel seen, respected and cared for.
The Mogoditshane/ Thamaga Council Secretary, Mr Jimmy McKenzie expressed gratitude after the victims received the aid.
He acknowledged that the assistance was much needed, as many homes had been damaged, leaving many families displaced.
“We are thankful for the overwhelming timely intervention we have received” Mr McKenzie stated.
He explained that in the Mogoditshane West area, more than 170 households required intervention.
He said the council was on the ground since Cyclone Dikeledi, evacuating some individuals to safer locations.
He noted that they were still conducting assessments, and so far about 95 families were assisted with food rations.
He pointed out that some families had lost everything including livestock such as chickens, which were swept away by flooding.
Mr McKenzie observed that many houses were damaged due to improper construction, particularly noting that poorly installed roofing had contributed to the destruction.
He therefore encouraged builders to ensure they carried out quality work in future projects. ENDS
