Mophane worm returns to parts of North East District
12 Jan 2025
Mophane worms have reappeared, though not in significant numbers, in some parts of the North East district after a two-year absence.
Harvesting is underway between Tshesebe and Mosojane, with collectors coming from villages as far away as Tutume and Shashemooke.
Collectors are reporting low yields despite the abundance of Mophane woodlands in the district. Prices remain high, with a cup selling for P20.
One harvester, Ms Chendzimu Aaron of Tutume, stated that proceeds from worms harvested would help pay her children’s school fees and uniforms.
She emphasised the importance of the worm as both a source of food and an income generator for the local people.
Another harvester, Ms Onalenna Molale of Shashemmoke, expressed gratitude for the small harvest, highlighting its significance after a two-year hiatus.
Young harvester Mr Kago Boy has urged fellow collectors to practice sustainable harvesting to ensure future yields. Reports of more abundant harvests in the Tswapong area suggest a potential improvement in supply.
The Mophane worm remains a crucial sustainable food source and plays a significant role in the local economy and culture. Ends
