Flooding causes disruption in Maun

12 Jan 2025

Residents of Maun are currently experiencing significant difficulties due to severe flooding that has affected the area. The incessant rainfall has caused substantial damage to both residential and infrastructural properties, resulting in a considerable impact on the community.

In one incident, a toilet structure which could not withstand the intensity of the rainfall collapsed in Ghxabara ward.

Ms Keoikantse Pontsho, a resident of Ghxabara ward, reported that their yard consistently suffered from flooding during periods of rain, marking this collapse the second occurrence of such an incident at their residence.

Re nna hela rele mo mogobeng wa metsi fa pula e na,” she stated.

In an interview, Acting Chief Emergency Service Officer Mr Ronnie Mathapi highlighted that, as floodwaters continue to rise, the situation has escalated to a critical level for numerous residents whose homes are now inundated. “Some residences have become completely uninhabitable, forcing families to seek alternative shelter as they contend with the consequences of this flooding,” Mr Mathapi commented.

In response to the crisis, the fire department has been mobilised to remove water from the most affected areas, particularly in Thito ward, to alleviate the situation and provide essential relief to residents stranded in their homes.

During a recent visit to the affected regions, NWDC Chairman, Mr Itumeleng Kelebetseng noted that a natural disaster response team had  been deployed, including social workers who were attending to urgent needs for shelter and food hampers. “The current situation is being managed effectively. However, should it escalate further, we are prepared to request assistance from higher authorities,” he asserted.

Approximately seven houses in Thito ward and at least three houses in Ghxabara ward have been adversely affected by the heavy rainfall. Ends
