12 Jan 2025

In a powerful and inspiring effort to break the stigma surrounding mental health, Ms Phemelo Mongwato, a rising social media influencer and advocate, has been using her platform on Facebook, ‘Wellness Within our Realities’, to raise awareness and encourage open discussion about mental wellbeing.

In an interview with BOPA, Ms Mongwato said she was dedicated to fostering a positive and supportive online community where individuals feel empowered to prioritise their mental health and seek help when needed.

She said over the past years she shared personal stories, educational content and expert insights through all her platforms including Instagram Zoom meetings and TikTok, quickly becoming a trusted voice in the mental health space.

From discussing different experiences with anxiety and depression to offering practical tips for coping with stress, Ms Mongwato, has been at the forefront of a movement that promotes mental health care as an essential aspect of overall wellbeing.

“Growing up, I never heard many people talk openly about mental health, and I wanted to change that and be part of the change,” she said adding that it was “to show people that it is okay to seek help.” Ms Mongwato further said it is important to realise that mental health is just as important as physical health, and there is need to normalise those conversations. She therefore said she created a safe space for individuals to express their emotions and find support, adding that she regularly collaborates with mental health professionals to ensure that the information she shares is accurate and helpful.

She further said the reason for the rising of Gender Based violence cases could be associated with untreated childhood traumas that require re-socialising and emotional healing of individuals to have a different mindset through mental health services such as counselling and she is up for it as she conducts free online counselling, marriage counselling, life coaching, speaking engagements and corporate wellness.

Last year Ms Mongwato was honoured with an award orgarnised by ‘Botswana Women Awards’, a prestigious accolade that recognises outstanding contributions to the field of health promotion and wellness advocacy.

She said the award highlights her tireless efforts to improve the lives of individuals through holistic health practices, education and community outreach. ENDS
