Crunch time at Galaxy Stadium

09 Jan 2025

Galaxy Stadium in Jwaneng will on Saturday be turned into a battle field as FNB Premiership pacesetters, TAFIC heads to diamond mining town for a vital clash against third placed Jwaneng Galaxy.

With the title race heating up, every game carries added weight and this one feels particularly significant. Such top of the table clashes are never short on drama and this encounter is likely to be no exception as it could potentially determine the destination of the league title at the end of the season.

With TAFIC sitting proudly at the top of the table, the clash is all about building on their momentum and showing the composure and consistency that has been the hallmark of their success so far.

It has been a remarkable season for TAFIC under  coach Elias Chinyemba who has reinvigorated the Matjimenyenga boys’ with his dynamic tactical approach and meticulous squad management. Victory against the back to back defending league champions would further solidify TAFIC’s title credentials.

After going rampant against Union Flamingo Santos with a half dozen of goals this past weekend, the encounter against Galaxy will be more about TAFIC’s mettle and aspirations.

Similarly, with Galaxy keeping the pressure on in the title race having played 13 games unbeaten, there is little room for error at the top of the table. Galaxy consistency has been remarkable in the past season and the Saturday’s fixture presents an opportunity to further assert their dominance in what promises to be a thrilling battle for Premier League supremacy.

The Jwaneng side prides itself with a galaxy of stars in their squad boasted by the experience gained through competing in the continental champions’ league games.
They have at their disposal the attacking threat of Thero Setsile and Omaatla Kebatho whose pace and movement are a constant menace and the TAFIC backline will need to be at their best to contain the pair on Saturday.

Galaxy have shown resilience this season, and with the expected return from injury by key players ike Goitseone Phoko and Onkabetse Makgantai back in the fold, the squad is expected to fire on all cylinders thus there is every reason for Galaxy fans to feel confident.

Defensively, Thabo Leinanyane’s leadership at the heart of defence would be invaluable and is expected to keep a close eye on TAFIC’s on form danger man Modise Modipe who scored a hatrick last weekend.

A win would not only give Galaxy three points but would also tie them at 28 points with the log leaders while also sending a clear message to the rest of the league contenders.

Meanwhile, in other FNB Premiership fixtures to be played on Saturday, VTM will host Township Rollers while Extension Gunners will travel to Francistown to take on Chadibe FC.
Matebele will face Sua Flamingoes while Gaborone United takes on BDF XI.

On Sunday, Morupule Wanders will play Santos while Mochudi Center Chiefs face NICO United. ENDS
