A total of 98 babies were born on new year’s day in various public health facilities across the country.
In an interview today, the Ministry of Health’s acting Chief Public Relations Officer, Mr Malepa Dibonwa said the babies brought smiles and excitement to families, health workers and communities as the nation began the year with a symbol of hope and new beginnings.
The 98 newborns, representing a diverse cross-section of the country’s population, were delivered in public health facilities across Botswana.
Mr Dibonwa praised the dedication of healthcare professionals who worked tirelessly over the festive season to ensure the safety and well-being of both mothers and their babies.
"The hospital staff, including obstetricians, midwives and nurses, are recognised for their commitment to delivering high-quality care during such a busy time," he said.
He noted that welcoming those 98 little ones was a reminder of the joy and resilience that came with each new life.
"Each child is a precious gift and represents the future of our nation. We are grateful to our healthcare workers and all those who contribute to making such deliveries possible," he said.
Mr Dibonwa further emphasised the country’s ongoing efforts to improve maternal and child healthcare services, with the government continuing to prioritise accessible and quality healthcare for all citizens.
"As the 98 babies begin their lives, the nation looks forward to the opportunities the new year will bring, with the birth of these little ones symbolising a bright future ahead for the country and its people," he said.
Mr Dibonwa reported that among the new babies was a set of male twins received at Gantsi Primary Hospital.
At Princess Marina Hospital (PMH) the first baby of the year was born at precisely 12:31am, marking a special moment for the family and the hospital staff.
PMH Assistant Matron, Ms Motshidisi Mphotwe said the baby's birth, alongside the others, was celebrated as a new chapter for the families involved and for the nation as a whole. ENDS
